Knowledge: what do we want students to know about?
Traditional subject matter (reading, writing, math, social studies, science) is included in the components of the Primary Years Programme. Teachers create plans that include all of the Standards required by the Beaverton School District (Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core, Oregon State Social Studies and Health). The content is documented in a scope and sequence document known as the Programme of Inquiry. In addition to the content standards, it is recognized that students need to acquire skills in context and need to explore content that transcends the boundaries of traditional subjects. "To be truly educated, a student must also make connections across the disciplines, discover ways to integrate the separate subjects and ultimately relate what they learn to life" (Boyer 1995). Boyers's work has led to the development of the PYP and the selection of six transdisciplanary themes.
