Second graders tell great stories!
Second graders are learning to appreciate stories from the past while studying personal histories from the PYP unit "Where We Are in Place and Time." Whether sharing personal memories, listening to memories from adults (parents, teachers, authors), or listening to each others' stories, students are engaging in communicating stories.
Students began by studying the history of Hiteon Elementary School and the changes that occurred over time. They learned the history around the name "Hiteon" and how the first school actually was built in a different location. Students also listened to and read books written by Patricia Pollacco and Eve Bunting. Through these books, they gained knowledge about narrative writing and reflected on their own personal history. Students are involved in writing a rich story about one event in their life! At Home, ask your child about their memories! Have your child tell you about the events in their life that are memorable. The event may be a big change (moving homes/schools, a birth of a sibling, death of a family member), a tradition (holiday celebration, vacation), or special moment (soccer game, visit from grandma). ASK your child to use descriptive words to tell their story! Did you hear a cute story from your child? Did they respond with something unexpected to a story that they heard? I want to hear all about it! Please SHARE your stories!
